REGISTRATION OF
MARRIAGES.
Marriages are being
registered under various acts- namely
1. Hindu Marriage Act 1955
2. Special Marriage Act 1955
3. Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872
4. The Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriage Act 2009
HINDU MARRIAGE ACT 1955
Hindu Marriage Act applies
to all Hindus.
CONDITIONs
Neither
party has a spouse at the time of the marriage
W.E.f 01-10-1978, the bridegroom should have
completed 21 years of age and the Bride
18 years of age.
Before 01-10-1978, it was 18 and 15
respectively.
A marriage under this act can be registered only after
solemnization as per customary Rites
or Suya
Mariyathai or seerthirutha marriage.
There is no time
limit prescribed for registration.
The Marriage may be
registered by a Sub-Registrar in whose jurisdiction the Bridegroom or Bride lives of the place where the marriage was
solemnized/
The Registration fee
is Rs.100/- if the registration is done
within 3 months from the date of
marriage , otherwise an additional fee
of Rs.25/- is levied .
SPECIAL MARRIAGE ACT.
Any Marriage ,
irrespective of religion , cast may be
solemnized and registered in this Act.
All Sub-Registrar are empowered
to solemnize and Register in their respective jurisdiction.
INDIAN CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE ACT 1982.
Under the Indian Christian
Marriage Act, Marriage may be solemnized
and registered if both the
Spouses or any one of them is a
Christian.
Marriage Registrars are being approved by Government .
Marriage Registrars and
Licensees, Ministers of Religion can
Register marriages under this Act.
THE TAMIL NADU COMPULSORY MARRIAGE REGISTRATION ACT :
Marriages of all
persons who are citizens of India , belonging to various religions are made compulsorily
registerable under this act.
All marriages performed on or after 29-11-2009 should be
registered under this Act.
All Sub-Registrars are
appointed as Marriage Registrars
The marriage may be
registered in the area where the
marriage is performed within 90 days
from the date of marriage.
CONDITIONS :
1
.Marriage must be performed under the
respective personal LAWS.

.Memorandum in duplicate should be
submitted.
3.
The Bridegroom and the Bride should have completed 21 & 18 years respectively.
4.
The Memorandum should be submitted within
60 days without fine and 90 days with
fine .
5.
A fee of Rs.100/- is levied , if the memorandum
is presented within 90 days and
an additional fine of Rs.50 is levied
for the extended period.
6.
There is no provision to register the marriage after 150 days.
